Remembering Archbishop Janani Luwum: A Legacy of Faith and CourageToday, February 16th, marks the 48th commemoration of Archbishop Janani Luwum, a day of remembrance for a man whose life and legacy continue to inspire many. Archbishop Luwum, the former Archbishop of the Anglican Church in Uganda, was martyred on this day in 1977 under the regime of President Idi Amin. His unwavering faith and courage in the face of oppression have left an indelible mark on the hearts of many.The commemoration takes place in Wii-Gweng, Mucwini Sub County, Kitgum District, where Archbishop Luwum was born and laid to rest. This year, the event has attracted a significant number of foot pilgrims from across Uganda, who have embarked on a pilgrimage to honor his memory. The journey, which began on February 9th from St. Philip’s Cathedral in Gulu, has seen pilgrims trekking through various locations, including Cwero, Atanga, Acholibur, and Kitgum Town Parish, before reaching their final destination.The main celebrant for this year’s event is the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, The Most Rev. Dr. Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu, with the Rt. Rev. Assoc. Prof. Sheldon Mwesigwa, Bishop of Ankole Diocese, delivering the sermon. A 540-member choir, representing various dioceses across Northern Uganda, will lead the worship. The event is expected to be graced by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni as the Chief Guest.The theme for this year’s commemoration is “Imitating God’s Goodness by Doing Good” (Galatians 6:9), reflecting Archbishop Luwum’s life of faith and his commitment to doing good in the face of adversity. The government has also announced plans to develop Mucwini into a modern tourism site to honor Archbishop Luwum’s legacy.As we remember Archbishop Janani Luwum today, we are reminded of his courage, faith, and the ultimate sacrifice he made for his beliefs. His legacy continues to inspire and guide us, urging us to stand firm in our convictions and to always strive for goodness and justice.Let us honor his memory by embodying the values he stood for and by continuing to work towards a better, more just world.

Frank Nabwiso: A Life of Service, Scholarship, and Leadership

Dr Frank Nabwiso, an eminent Ugandan scholar, politician, and educator, passed away at the age of 84 on December 13, 2024, at the Church of Uganda Hospital in Mukono.

Born in 1940 at Bugembe Maternity Centre to Ezekiel Kijja Bulima and Eseza Ruth Matama, Nabwiso’s life journey was marked by relentless dedication to education, community service, and national development.
Nabwiso began his education at Jinja Sub-Grade, now St James Senior Secondary School.

He proceeded to Kamuli Junior Secondary School and later Busoga College Mwiri, where his academic prowess became evident.

He continued his studies at Kyambogo Teachers College, graduating as a Grade III teacher.

On October 1, 1962, he became the first Musoga to anchor Lusoga news on Radio Uganda, a significant milestone in promoting local languages in media.

His ambition drove him to pursue further education, and he enrolled at Makerere University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in History and Political Science in 1967.

Later that year, he received a scholarship to Sussex University in the UK, where he obtained a Master’s Degree in Development Studies in 1969.
In pursuit of academic excellence, Nabwiso earned his PhD in Adult Education and Rural Development from Wisconsin Madison University, completing it on August 10, 1976.

Nabwiso returned to Uganda and joined Makerere University as a Resident Tutor, succeeding Prof Apollo Nsibambi.

His career later took him to Nairobi, where he worked for the International Planned Parenthood Federation as a Regional Education Officer for Sub-Saharan Africa. His role saw him coordinate educational initiatives across the region.

During his time in Nairobi, Nabwiso became deeply involved in Uganda’s political transition.

He joined the National Resistance Movement (NRM) in 1984 and served as the Secretary for the External Wing.
In 1985, he played a crucial role as the secretary of the peace talks in Nairobi between Gen Tito Okello Lutwa’s government and the NRA, led by Yoweri Museveni.

In 1987, he was appointed Executive Director of the Uganda Export Promotion Council, serving for five years.

He also served as the second Director of the AIDS Information Centre for three years, championing efforts against the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

In 2001, Nabwiso was elected Member of Parliament for Kagoma County, serving a single term.

He continued his advocacy for multiparty democracy and in 2008 was appointed Secretary of the Inter-Party Cooperation, an alliance of key political parties including UPC, FDC, DP, CP, and JEEMA.

In 2013, Nabwiso was appointed Acting Vice Chairperson of Busoga University.

He also volunteered at a Jinja-based Cultural research center under Jinja Diocese, dedicating his time to knowledge-sharing and mentorship.

A devoted family man, Nabwiso is survived by nine children, including Jonathan and Mathew Nabwiso, three of whom were adopted.

Dr Frank Nabwiso’s life was a testament to the power of education, resilience, and service.

He leaves behind a legacy of impactful leadership and unwavering dedication to his country and community.

Renewal Of Practicing License

Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council wish to remind all Nurses and Midwives who are practicing with expired licenses to renew them to avoid being inconvenienced. For those whose license expire on 31 st December 2024, we advise you not to wait for December, and start the process of renewal. It is prudent that you start on the process of renewal as early as possible, to avoid last minute submissions which may led to unforeseen inconveniences. We also wish to remind you that renewal of practicing license is done online using the UNMC online Registration and Licensure system. Kindly follow the following steps to submit your documents for renewal;
Go to Google Chrome and type (www.registration.unmc.ug), and sign in if you already have an account or sign up if you want to create an account.
When you login, you will access the dash board which contains three cards (Icons that represent the services offered on the system i.e. Professional registration, Private Registration and Renewal.
From the three icons select License Renewal
Select the type of license you are renewing for (Private Practice License or Professional Practice License)
Choose professional practice license.
Enter your profession and qualification, and click continue
Enter your National ID (NIN), and click continue
Enter your personal information, then click continue.
Enter your address, then click continue.
Enter your Next of kin’s information, then click continue.
Enter your Academic information, then click continue.
Upload the required documents (NB: all documents should be scanned separately in PDF format except the Passport Photo which should be in JPG or PNG format), click continue.
Preview information that you have entered to confirm that it is correct.
Once you confirm that the information that you have entered is correct, check (Tick on) the declaration notice, and click on submit.
After verification of your submission (this takes a day or two) your submission is either approval or rejected
When your submission is rejected, your received a notification showing what exactly has been rejected, and a reason for rejection. You are supposed to submit again
When your submission is approved, you carry on and make payments (a payment card will appear on your dashboards), and payments are made through Mobile Money and Airtel Money, not the bank.
After making payment, a license card will appear on your dashboard. (download and print it out)
You can then come at the Council offices to pick your original license. Please come along with the following a copy of the provisional license and payment receipt, plus your original documents of your previous license and certificate of enrollment or registration.
