Welcome to the Family, Freshers! Your Journey in Health Sciences Begins Today
Category: Admissions & Student Life | Read Time: 4 min
To every new student joining the International Institute of Health Sciences (IIHS) Jinja this intake: a warm and heartfelt welcome!
Choosing a career in healthcare—whether in nursing, midwifery, or allied health—is far more than picking an academic path. It is choosing a life of service, compassion, technical excellence, and community impact. As you step onto our campus for Orientation Week, know that you are now part of a community dedicated to walking alongside you every step of the way.
“The art of healing begins with the courage to learn. Today, you take your first step toward transforming lives—starting with your own.”
What to Expect in Your First Few Weeks
Transitioning into a health teaching institute can feel fast-paced, but we have structured your opening weeks to build your confidence step-by-step:
Orientation Week: You’ll meet your department heads, campus tutors, and student council leaders. They will walk you through academic expectations, campus navigation, and clinical requirements.
Skills Lab Familiarization: Long before you care for patients in hospital wards, you’ll spend hands-on time in our upgraded simulation labs, practicing core clinical skills in a safe, guided environment.
Peer Mentorship & Community: You’ll be paired with senior student buddies and faculty mentors who understand the journey and can offer advice on everything from effective study habits to managing hostel life.
Freshers’ First-Week Survival Guide
To help you get grounded and make the most of your first days at IIHS Jinja, keep these four essential tips in mind:
1. Complete Your Onboarding Early
Make sure your physical documentation, application clearance, and course registrations are completed at the Academic Registrar’s Office during orientation week so your student portal and ID processing stay on track.
2. Get Equipped
Familiarize yourself with the dress code and clinical attire required for your course. Ensure your lab coats, nursing uniforms, and basic diagnostic tools (like a stethoscope and medical watch) are ready for practical sessions.
3. Learn to Ask for Help
Health training is rigorous, and no one expects you to know everything on day one. If you feel overwhelmed by coursework, clinical terms, or adjusting to life away from home, reach out to your Dean of Students, campus counselors, or course tutors early.
4. Build Good Habits from Day One
The habits you form now will define your clinical confidence later. Attend all lectures, take active notes, practice regularly in the skills lab, and build study groups with your fellow freshers early in the term.
A Personal Message to the New Intake
It is entirely normal to feel a mix of excitement, curiosity, and a little nervousness right now. Remember that every skilled nurse, compassionate midwife, and health leader who graduated from IIHS Jinja once sat right where you are sitting today.
You belong here, you earned your spot, and we are thrilled to watch you grow into the healthcare professional you were meant to be.
Welcome to IIHS Jinja—let’s make your first semester unforgettable!
